This course provides you with the fundamentals of a complete, adaptive labor management program.
How do you set up a labor management program? What are the key variables? What is the involvement of the executive team versus the departmental directors? Who has the accountability for success of this program?
Each of these questions is critical in designing the labor management program at your facility. This course will provide an understanding and overview of these critical aspects in designing and executing a comprehensive labor management program. With software and support available in the industry today, an effective labor management program is within reach of all hospitals and health systems, regardless of their facility size or internal technical expertise.
Upon completion of this course, you will walk away with the following skills:
- Understanding benchmarking comparisons, peer groups and utilizing a comparative database
- Understanding the implications of labor cost reduction based on selection of the benchmark level a hospital wishes to achieve
- How to set a productivity "target" for each department based on historical performance, national and regional peer groups, and current departmental performance
- Calculating and understanding departmental and hospital-wide productivity
- The effect on cost of labor by variables such as skill mix, overtime and flexing staffing to changing volumes
- Understanding the corporate options for labor management and accountability
- Budgeting for labor to predict and control labor expense
- Impacting labor costs without negatively impacting satisfaction scores
Location:
Two course delivery options are available for participants: on-campus and online with interactivity:
On-Campus Course is held in state-of-the-art facilities on the University of Southern California campus, located in downtown Los Angeles. Participants attending on campus will have the option to commute to the course or stay at one of the many hotels located in the area.
Overview of on-campus option:
- The ability to interact with faculty and peers in person.
- Access to hard copy course materials.
- Ability to logon and view archived course information - up to 7 days after the course has been offered. This includes course documents and streaming video of the lectures. Online course access is only available if there are online participants in the program.
- If there is a conflict during any on-campus course dates, on-campus participants can elect to be an online/interactive student with prior authorization from Professional Programs. Please note that this is only an option if there are online participants in the program.
- Parking, refreshments, and lunch are provided for on-campus participants - unless otherwise specified.
Online (Interactivity) Course delivery is completely online and real-time, enabling interaction with the instructor and fellow participants. Participants have the flexibility of completing the course from a distance utilizing USC's Distance Education Network technology. Students are required to be online for the entirety of each day's session.
Overview of online (interactive):
- Virtually participate in the course live - with the ability to either ask questions or chat questions to the entire class.
- WebEx technologies provide the option to call into the class and view the entire lecture/materials on a personal computer, or to participate on a computer without having to utilize a phone line.
- Ability to logon and view archived course information up to 7 days after the course has been offered. This includes course documents and streaming video of the lectures.

The USC Viterbi School of Engineering Certificate of Participation is awarded to all participants upon successful completion of the course.
The USC Viterbi School of Engineering Certificate of Completion and the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering certification in Healthcare Labor Management will be awarded to those participants that pass the assessment on the final day of the course.
